Biography

Charles Bruce, 4th Earl of Elgin was born on 29 May 1682. He was the son of Thomas Bruce, 3rd Earl of Elgin and Lady Elizabeth Seymour.
He married, firstly, Lady Anne Saville, daughter of William Saville, 2nd Marquess of Halifax and Elizabeth Grimston, on 7 February 1705/6 at St. Gile's-in-the-Fields Church, London, England. He married, secondly, Lady Juliana Boyle, daughter of Charles Boyle, 3rd Earl of Cork and Juliana Noel, on 2 February 1719/20 [19 January 1719/20 O.S.]. He married, thirdly, Lady Caroline Campbell, daughter of General John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll and Hon. Mary Bellenden, on 18 June 1739 at Somerset House Chapel, The Strand, London, England.
He died on 10 February 1747 at age 64, without surviving male issue.
He was buried on 16 February 1746/47 at Maulden, Bedfordshire, England.3 His will was proven (by probate) in April 1747.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Great Bedwyn between 1705 and 1708. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Marlborough from 1710 to 1711, even though he had been re-elected to Great Bedwyn in 1710.
He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron Bruce of Whorlton, co. York [E., 1641] on 29 December 1711, in his father's name.
He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Bruce of Kinloss [S., 1608] on 16 December 1741.4 He succeeded to the title of 6th Baron Bruce of Kinlosse [S., 1604] on 16 December 1741.4 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Bruce of Skelton, co. York [E., 1665] on 16 December 1741.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Bruce of Ampthill, Bedfordshire [E., 1665] on 16 December 1741.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl of Elgin [S., 1633] on 16 December 1741.
He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Ailesbury, Buckinghamshire [E., 1665] on 16 December 1741.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Lord Bruce of Kinloss [S., 1633] on 16 December 1741.
He succeeded to the title of 6th Lord Kinloss [S., 1602] on 16 December 1741.4 He was created 1st Baron Bruce of Tottenham, Wiltshire [Great Britain] on 17 April 1746, with the unusual special remainder to his nephew, Thomas Bruce-Brudenell.
On his death, his English titles, Earl of Ailesbury, Viscount Bruce of Ampthill and Baron Bruce of Skelton, all became extinct. His Scottish titles went to the Elgin line, except the Lordship of Kinloss [1602] and Barony of Bruce of Kinloss [1608] which went to the Duke of Buckingham.
