Thomas was born in 1855 in the Cherokee Nation to Ezekiel Buffington and Louisa Newman. He married twice. First to Susan Woodall. Second to Emma L. Gray. They had a house full of girls: Lucille, Sue Nell, Maxine, Marie and Margarite.
He served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1899 until 1903. He previously served as the the mayor of Vinita, Oklahoma where he retired to and died in 1938. He is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Vinita.[1]
