James Buffington was born in 1809 in the Cherokee Nation (East). His parents were Ellis Buffington and Catherine Daniel. [1] He married Matilda Benge about 1829. They were the parents of Ellis, Susan, Elizabeth, Ezekiel, Ruth Ann, and John. James and Matilda emigrated to Indian Territory as Old Settlers in 1834, along with his parents and other family members. [2] James and all the children except Susan (who was already married) appear on the 1851 Old Settler roll living in the Delaware District. [3] James' death date is unknown. He appears in no further records.
