Biography

The fictional patriarch of this line was the creation of 17th century and later genealogists who created an extremely unaccurate family tree for the de Burgh family.

This problematic identification may have arisen in a passage by John Thomas Gilbert, in his 'History of the viceroys of Ireland' in which he describes what happened in Ireland following the death of Richard de Clare (Strongbow) in 1176, leaving the recently established Norman position there vulnerable to Irish resurgence. Gilbert introduces this passage by naming Henry ll's Seneschal 'Guillaume Fitz-Aldhelm de Burgh' . Gilbert then explains that Henry ll, then in Normandy, wrote, 'I now send to you Guillaume Fitz-Aldelm, my seneschal whom I have entrusted with the management and arrangement of affairs in my stead as my viceroy .... I shall confirm his proceedings as if executed by myself and all your transactions with him shall be ratified by me.' [1]

To add some more information about this. "William Fitzadelm de Burgh" is an amalgam of two historical charactors William FitzAdelm (note there are different spellings, fitz Aldelin appears to be preferred) and William de Burgh, the only thing that connects them is that they both spent time in Ireland. That they are different is shown by the fact they have different Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entries. The entry on William de Burgh is by C.A. Empey a specialist on the Anglo-Normans in Ireland, you can find it here:

That on William fitz Aldelin is by Marie Flanagan an emeritus professor who specialises in 12th c Irish history, you can find it here:

https://www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-9538?rskey=VcBLxk&result=1

Note Flanagan states in the above article: ` In the past he [William fitz Aldelin] has been confused with William de Burgh, the brother of the thirteenth-century justiciar Hubert de Burgh, but this identification has long been discredited. '

The William Fitzaldelm De Burgh name is based on some mistaken theory theory of Sir Wiliam Dugdale in the 17th Century. This theory was first demolished by J.H. Round in "Feudal England" p. 516 who showed that William fitz Adlem and William de Burgh were two different people. And then Clarence Ellis in "Hubert de Burgh A Study in Constancy" pp. 183-187 reviews the evidence and again shows that the two Williams were indeed different people. The family tree of Hubert, William, Thomas and Geoffrey de Burgh does back as far as their mother who was probably called Alice and their father who might have been called Walter, after that there's no further evidence.
