George W. Burroughs was the oldest child of Rebecca and Asa Burroughs. He was born February 3, 1825 in Cleveland, Ohio where his boyhood was spent. He secured employment on a canal boat. For several years he was the owner and captain of a boat on the Wabash and Erie canal.
He settled at Lafayette, Ind. in 1849. He was married on November 4, 1849 to Miss Delilah Rinard, at Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio. Miss Rinard was the daughter of James and Angeline Cohee Rinard.
Mr. Burroughs engaged in the ice business for many years in Lafayette. He served for some time as a member of the city council.
Mr. Burroughs was a member of the Episcopal church. He died at his home in Lafayette, November 4, 1892.
