Sir Edward Burton, Knight Banneret^[1]

The parents of Sir Edward Burton are unknown, although Burke^[2] appears to suggest that Edward originated from Yorkshire and that his father may have been a William Burton living in the reign of Henry VI.

His year of birth is unknown and is estimated as c 1420.

Sir Edward Burton, was made Knight Banneret in 1460.^[1][2][3][4]

“Sir Edward Burton for his services to the House of York in 14 battles, had the singular honour of Knight banneret conferred upon him by Edward IV. In 1460 after the battle of St Albans. Sir Edward settled at Longner co Salop and from him descended his son, Sir Robert Burton, knt, had the first grant of arms May 23 1478; his son Edward m. Jocosa Coyney; he d. 1524; their eldest son John m. Elizabeth Poyner, and d.1543; Edward his eldest son m Anne Madock; he d. 1558 …”^[1]

[Uncertain] 1 Richard III [1483-1484]: "To Edward Burton the king hath confirmed such graunte as he had from the fee of the Corone of king E. the iiij for terme of his lyff."^[5]

Research Notes

NB The earliest generation in the Burton of Longnor pedigree in the Visitation of Shropshire is the grandson of this Edward Burton, i.e. Edward Burton who married Joyce, surname uncertain.^[6] The pedigree incorrectly states that the Edward Burton who married Joyce was made Knight Banneret.
