He enlisted 05 May 1758 in Capt. Thatcher's Company of Yarmouth and served until 28 November 1758 in an expedition against Crown Point (Col. Doty's Regiment). Since he died in 1776, he would not be the James Cahoon who fought in 1777.

James married Rebecca Eldredge on 4 Sep 1740, in Harwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Together, James and Rececca had nine children in 22 years.
