Captain Stephen Calkins served with Vermont Republic during the American Revolution.
We have no date of the marriage of Stephen and Rebecca. They were not married in Connecticut. Stephen was a sea captain and tradition comes down to us that he married in England on one his voyages. He names his wife, "Rebecca" in his will made March 26, 1801; and among her friends she was known as "Lady Rowland". Stephen with his wife and son Richard, came to Danby, Vermont in 1767, being among the first settlers of that place. He was prominent in the history of the town, taking part in the stirring events of the revolution, being a member of the committee of safety, etc. He was also a Captain in Col. Ira Allen's regiment of " Green Mountain Boys". he built the first grist mill in his section of the country, receiving a bonus of sixty acres of land from the township. He quarried his first set of mill stones from the granite ledge, near which the mill was built.
