Research Notes
Parentage - no source found for birth/baptism date 1580 on Ancestry or Find my Past. As Leonard Calvert was a recusant Catholic there would not necessarily be a baptism even if parish registers were available. Parish records for Danby Wiske and the Chapelry of Bolton on Swale do not begin until 1600. However, there are records of Leonard's appearances before the Yorkshire High Commission on Recusants which made very detailed orders as to the education of his children. In 1592 and 1593, the only sons mentioned are George and Christopher.[3] Samuel is not mentioned in the Calvert pedigree in Glover's Visitations.[4] He does not appear in the Calvert pedigree given on the Kiplin Hall website, which states: "There are claims on the internet that Leonard Calvert (1550-1611) and his wife Alice Crossland (1552-1587) had as many as 11 children, but the only 3 for whom there is any contemporary documentary evidence are George himself (born 1579) who became 1st Lord Baltimore, Christopher (1580) who was sent to the same Protestant school, and Dorothy (about 1582). We would be pleased to hear of any proof of the parentage of Helen, Leonard, Thomas, Anne, Isabel, Samuel, Mary or John."[5]
There is a possible burial at Calverley (where son William lived) 28 December 1701, Samuel Calvert of Thackley.[6] That Samuel left a will, proved 17 January 1701/1702 which might answer some questions.[7] This death could not be Samuel born in 1580, but that birth is unproven and seems a stretch anyway - the marriage to Martha (looks like duplicate wives) is 1641 when he was 61 and there are apparent children of this marriage up to Alice 1668[8] - needs checking as there may be other Samuels at Calverley. He would have been 88 at that time, seems late in life to go to Ireland too.
