Biography

Although unproven, family tradition generally claims that a man named Douglas Neil Campbell (also referred to as Cornelius, Neil or Neal Campbell) is the name of the immigrant ancestor of our Campbell family in America. 1 He is thought to have come to America from Scotland with five children in the 1750's. 1 His wife, however, whose name is not known, is reputed to have died in Scotland prior to their leaving. 1

Even though family tradition holds that the family originally landed on the eastern shore of New Jersey, at least two of the below named children are known to have spent time with the Clark family, a Quaker family who resided in Chester and York Counties, Pennsylvania, 1 The other three children appear to be associated with South Carolina, and may have been placed with another family that moved to South Carolina at an earlier date. At least four of the children are known to have ended up in South Carolina for time, however. 1

NOTE: No documentary evidence has yet been found regarding the identity of this individuals spouse or parents.
