Biography

Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll (c. 1486 – 9 October 1529) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier. He was the son of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll and Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox.[1][2]

This Colin, 3rd Earl of Argyll, was one of the Four Councillors of the Regency to King James V, anno 1525, and appointed Lord Lieutenant of the Borders, and Warden of the Marches.

Campbell led an army against the insurrection of various Highland chieftains; a few years later, he joined the court of King James V. He was given the position Lord Warden of the Marches and in 1528, Lord Justice General of Scotland.[3]

In 1506/07 he married Lady Janet (Jean) Gordon, the eldest daughter of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly.[4] They had issue:

  1. Archibald Campbell, 4th Earl of Argyll[4] d. bt 21 August 1558 – 2 December 1558, married three times.
  2. John Campbell, 1st of Lochnell ; m. Mary, daughter of Colin 4th of Ardkinglas[4] d. 13 May 1568 at the Battle of Langside
  3. Alexander[4]
  4. Lady Elizabeth Campbell d. c 1548, m. 1st James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, an illegitimate son of King James IV; m. 2nd, John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland[4]
  5. Lady Agnes Campbell (1526–1601), m. James MacDonald and Turlough Luineach O'Neill.[4]

Colin died towards the end of 1529.[3]

Vice-Regent and Lieutenant of the Kingdom 1511; Justice-General of Scotland 1514; Lieutenant of the Isles 1516; Lieutenant of the Borders and Warden of the Marches 1528; Master of the King's Household 1528. [5]

Research Notes

A duplicate version of this profile (citing Cracrofts Peerage) suggested that Archibald Campbell didn't marry Elizabeth Stewart; his son Colin did, and that Archibald & Elizabeth Somerville are Colin's parents. This needs to be researched further, and a maintenance category is being added to this profile. Stevens-17832 16:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
