James was born about 1767 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He was the son of Isaac Cantrell and Nancy Cloud. He passed away in 1838 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He is purportedly buried in Williams Cemetery #1, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County. There does not appear to be a marked gravestone.[1]
