Biography

Esther was born about 1718. She was the daughter of Jotham Carpenter and Desire Martin. She died on 28 Oct 1794 at the age of 76 and was buried with her husband Nathan Bowen.[1]

Esther was married to Nathan Bardeen by Samuel Maxwell, a Swanzey minister, on January 4, 1735. Interestingly, a note was made in the Vital Record of Rehoboth consisting of the following: Bardeen, Nathan of Swanzey and Esther Carpenter of Rehoboth, (forbidden), Oct. 18, 1735. [2] I am not sure what this means as it would have been after her January marriage. I wonder if the date was 1734? One of the things that stands out to me is that she would have been 17 marrying a man older than herself. According to "Massachusetts Marriage Ways" It was not typical at that time in Massachusetts for a woman to marry so young, usual age was around 23. She may have needed parental consent along with banns or an expensive license.

Also, it is a bit odd that she married twice on the same dates of January 4 so it could be a mistake in the source info but strange things happen.

When Esther married Nathaniel Bowen on January 4, 1737, again with Samuel Maxwell as minister, she was the widow of Nathan Bardeen. She had a young son with Nathan Bardeen who was also named Nathan, born 23 Feb, 1736/7 in Swansea. (Bamberg)

Esther was born about 1707.

She married Nathaniel Bowen in 1735.[3]

Cardeen-1 and Carpenter-7482 appear to represent the same person because: same spouse, same child, pay attention to spelling of last name at time of merge
