Biography

George's position as younger brother and heir of Sir Thomas does not seem to be made explicit in any contemporary document yet found. In visitation pedigrees made some generations later both his father and grandfather are named William. Early generations are often wrong in such pedigrees but if taken seriously then it would George is more likely a nephew.[1]

In 1397, Ormerod (p.545) notes that he was granted an annuity of 100s by the king, being retained for service for life.

In 1398 George de Carynton, an esquire (armiger, someone in line to use the family coat of arms, but not yet a knight) appears in a roll of payments to soldiers for the King`s bodyguard.[2]

In 1400, George de Carynton, from the Hundred of Bucklow, Cheshire was a man-at-arms in an expedition to Scotland under Thomas Danyers.[3]

In 1402, a document cited by Ormerod (p.542) described his main estate:

In the rental of Dunham-Massy, 3 Hen.
[ChatGPT translation:] Georgius Carington, knight, holds his manor of Carington and a moiety of the town of Ashton, and a third part of the town of Partington, for two parts of a knight's fee; as by the charter made by Hamon Massy, knight, to the predecessors of the said George. And rendering annually for the Stuthe, otherwise called sheriff-tooth, 7 denarii.

Ormerod listed the following children, which also correspond more or less with the 1580 visitation pedigree which the family made:[4]

  • Sir John de Caryngton starts appearing in records about 1420, died before 1453. He m. isabel who was a daughter of Sir John de Beeston and a widow of Sir Robert de Aston. Their son and heir was Hamon Caryngton.
  • Nicholas de Caryngton, who apparently died without children.
  • Ralph de Caryngton, who apparently died without children. Apparently a priest.
  • William de Carynton, who had descendants.
  • Peter de Carynton, living in 1412. Apparently had no children.
  • Edward de Carynton
  • George de Carynton
  • Margaret, wife of Robert Massey of Sale. The marriage required a papal dispensation.

Resarch notes

Strangely, Copinger claimed that Margeret the DAUGHTER of Robert Massey of Sale was George's first wife and the mother of his children. The Ormerod pedigree in contrast says that the WIFE of Robert Massey was his daughter! Copinger also claimed that Elizabeth the widow of George was a second wife who had no heirs. Copinger is not a very reliable source. Did he simply misread Ormerod's pedigree?[5]

Copinger cites no records mentioning the first wife in any way. His work on this family was heavily criticized by J.H. Round for promoting and embellishng fraudulent claims. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Carrington_Imposture

Anyone have a source for the mother's surname and family?

Interesting work done here, but I don't see any primary sources. This all needs to be verified, IMO.

See comments on the wife’s profile. There are serious errors, some of which were noted in 2019, and not addressed. The Royal … etc. .. Ancestors webpage has significant differences (note that it cites Family Group Sheets as the source).
