Biography

Lieutenant Jacob Carter was born about 1756 in the New Jersey colony and died after 1850, in Covington County, Mississippi. [1] Jacob is the son of John Carter, Daughter of the American Revolutionary War Patriot. [2] The families of John Carter, Sr. and Levi Carter, Sr. made the trip together from New Jersey to Tennessee, with long stopovers in Virginia and North Carolina. They may have been brothers, approximately the same age, and both died in Greene County, in 1811. [3]

Lord Dunmore's War, also known as Dunmore's War, was a brief conflict in fall 1774 between the British Colony of Virginia and the Shawnee and Mingo in the trans-Appalachian region of the colony south of the Ohio River. Broadly, the war included events between May and October 1774.

In 1777, his family was residing in North Carolina. Jacob applied for a Passport in 1811 and came to what was then Lawrence/Marion Co, Mississippi. Jacob married Charity Elam Sample, born 1760, in Virginia. She died in 1844, in Marion County, Mississippi, and is buried in the Carter Cemetery, in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi. [4]

Children of Jacob and Charity, named in his Will [5] are:

  1. Mary Matilda Carter, born 1785 in North Carolina, married Samuel Lane
  2. Highly Carter, born circa 1787, married Noel Roberts
  3. Serena Carter married ___ Jones
  4. William Wilkins Carter, married Appy Watson
  5. Marcus Elam Carter, born 1794 Clarke County, Georgia, died 4Mar 1869 Covington County, Mississippi, married (1817 Jasper Co, GA) Lydia E. Williams, 1800-1880

Jacob is found at the age of 94 years, on the United States Census of 1850, residing in the home of his son Marcus E. Carter, and his wife, Lidia and eight children, in Covington County, Mississippi [6]

Jacob Carter died March 24, 1857, over 100 years of age, in Covington County, Mississippi, where his son lived. He is buried in the Carter Cemetery, in Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi, with his wife. [7]
