Salem Ark., newspaper - March 14, 1943:
"Daniel Lee Carter, long time resident of this county died at his home in Shady Grove community Sunday night. He had been in poor health for some time and doctors attributed his death to paralysis.
Lee Carter as he was familiarly known to his many friends was born in Carter Co., Mo., on Feb. 15, 1869 and moved to this county when young. He has farmed all his life.
He is survived by a wife, one sister, four sons, Bart, Virgil, John and Ray, all of this county, one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Dutton of Clay Center, Kansas.
Interment was in the Flint Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Higginbotham Funeral Service and Rev. A.L. Love conducted the services."
Bobby Rex Carter, grandson of Daniel L. Carter relates the following story.
"Before Daniel died he was confined to bed, and Bobby Rex would go and visit him. At one point in their conversation Daniel looked at Bobby and said, "I'm just an old bastard."
A NOTE: Daniel Carter had the finest reputation in Fulton Co., ARK. In1 994 an elderly lady was in the feed store in Viola and struck up a conversation with me (Mary Stuart). I mentioned that Daniel was my gr-grandfather and she remembered him and carried on about his fine character. It never occurred to me that grandfather was ever bothered by the circumstances of his birth, but obviously he was, and now I wonder if the circumstances of his birth influenced his wonderful, upright character, in that he tried to rise above it and the reputation of his father, Isaac Barton Carter.
