Biography

Joseph Hiram Carter was born 1 Feb 1820 in White River, Tennessee, USA, son of Elijah Carter and Susannah Cassel[1]

An unsourced family tree claims he was born in Campbell, Tennessee, United States.

He died 25 Jul 1906 in Albany, Athens Twp, Gentry, Missouri, and was buried the following day at Carter Cemetery, Albany, Athens Twp, Gentry, Missouri, United States.

His Find-a-Grave memorial includes a link to his spouse, Nancy Elizabeth Turner, but also includes a photo of his gravestone which identifies his (subsequent?) wife as Charity Carter.[2]

He received a license to marry Elizabeth Turner on 1 Feb 1840; they were married on 4 Feb 1840.[3]

In 1850, he resided in Allen, Gentry, Missouri, United States.[4]

In 1860, he resided in Township 65, Gentry, Missouri, United States.[5]

In 1870, he resided in Walnut, Dallas Iowa.[6]

In 1880, he resided in Walnut, Dallas, Iowa, United States.[7]

In 1900, he might be the Joseph Carter, born Feb 1820 TN, living in Bloomfield & Salt Creek Townships, Mitchell, Kansas with a subsequent wife, Sarah, who he'd married in 1883 (the year after Elizabeth died). The problem with this identification is that the census indicates his parents were born in Pennsylvania.[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Albert,

I've been working on dateless profiles and came across this family when I found dates for another profile.

Joseph's Find-a-Grave memorial (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/9738764/joseph-hiram-carter) includes a son Charles *Russel* Carter who has a profile - Carter-1270.

But you've got the son as Charles *Reuben* Carter who is *not* listed on the Find-a-Grave memorial. EDITED TO ADD: And I see that Charles Reuben Carter's Find-a-Grave memorial does not include his parents. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/41776444/charles-reuben-carter

What do you think?

On the 1860 Fed Census we see children listed:

Nathan, John, James, Mary, Baxter, Peter, Elijah, Jane, John, RUSSELL, Izabel, Hannah, Rachel, Jackson. I have a DNA match to someone from this family through Susannah Cassell sister of my ancestor Peter. I can check her tree because I did not add these distant cousins entirely. I do have records for Elijah, Rachel and two others not on that census. It’s a bit fuzzy because there were two Carter - Turner marriages in Missouri, I’m unsure how if they indeed are related but their children share the same names in many instances. The other family was in Boone, not Gentry.

So I dug deeper. An unsourced handwritten family data sheet has name Reuben instead of Russell. Likely the source. All his records say Russell. I can email you a copy if you’d like.

That findagrave is also puzzling because the wife is not Nancy Turner. It’s Charity. Nancy d 1882. Joseph in my tree died 1906 so possibly he married a second time.

I cleaned up the profile and added sources for each of the censuses, looking at each. I saw no presence of a son REUBEN, but did see the presence of a son RUSSELL. That makes me think the attachment of REUBEN is inaccurate.

In the 1900 census, if it's for THIS Joseph Carter, he's married to a SARAH; they've been married since 1883 (the year after Elizabeth died).
