Elizabeth Hill Carter was born in 1731 at Corotoman Plantation, the Governor's Residence, in Lancaster county, Virginia. Her grandfather was Robert Carter I (1662/63 – 4 August 1732), a colonial Governor of Virginia and one of the wealthiest men in the British colonies in North America. [1] Elizabeth's father was the Honorable John Carter, Secretary of State, and her mother was Elizabeth Hill, born at Shirley Plantation in Charles City county, Virginia. [2]
On April 14, 1748, in Charles City county, Virginia, Elizabeth married Colonel William Byrd, III, born September 26, 1728, at Westover Plantation, in Charles City county. William's grandfather was born in 1652 in England and immigrated to American, where he died at Westover Plantation in 1704. William's father, William Byrd, II, died at Westover Plantation in 1744. William had two older brothers that had died in infancy, leaving him the only male heir with five sisters. [3]
