Biography

Charles Hill Carter born 15 Oct 1732 in Corotoman, Lancaster, Virginia, son of John Carter and Elizabeth Cooke (Hill) Carter.[1]

Charles Hill Carter married first to Mary Walker Carter

Charles Hill Carter married second to Anne Butler Moore.[1] They had issue:

  1. Robert, m. Mary Nelson of York County
  2. Anne married on June 18, 1793 to Henry Lee at Shirley Plantation. [2]
  3. Bernard Moore, m. Lucy Lee
  4. Catherine Spottswood, m. Dr. Carter Berkeley
  5. William, m. Charlotte Touslee
  6. Mildred Walker
  7. Lucy, m. Nathaniel BUrwell, of Roanoke
  8. Fitzhugh

The father John Carter died 31 July 1742. After the prescribed period of mourning expired, the widow Elizabeth Carter married a certain Browler Cocke of whom little is known except that he held Shirley until the year 1771, at which date Charles Carter of Crotoman came into the estate of Shirley.[3]

(on behalf of Carter Lee, Anna Lee, Smith Lee, Robert Lee, & Mildred Lee): Petition, Charles City County, Virginia, 12 Dec 1816; Legislative Petitions of the [Virginia] General Assembly, 1776-1865, Accession Number 36121, Box 52, Folder 38; digital images, Library of Virginia (http://digitool1.lva.lib.va.us:8881/R/-?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=510436 : accessed 5 January 2018). [The image includes the Last Will and Testament of Mildred W Carter, daughter of the late Charles Carter Esq of Sherley [sic] decd; bequests to affectionate friends Mary & Ann Nelson, daughters of Mr. Robert Nelson; rest and residue ... I give and bequeath to my brother Bernard and William in trust and for ... my dear sister Lee during her life free from the control of her husband General Lee; dated 31 day of May 1807; Will proved 17th day of December 1807.
