Robert Hill Carter was born in 1774 at his family's ancestral home, Shirley Plantation. He married Mary Nelson[1], the daughter of Governor Thomas Nelson of Virginia, and they raised four children. After a dispirited study of Agriculture at the College of William and Mary, Robert enrolled at medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, inspired by his son Hill Carter's severly broken (compound fracture) leg. Robert graduated and found medicine to be his life's calling.
Sadly, his wife Mary died shortly after his graduation and the children were raised by their grandparents on both sides of the family: the Carters at Shirley Plantation and the Nelsons at Yorktown, VA. With the children safely entrusted to good hands, Robert sought to better prepare for a medical career by studying in Paris, France. While there in 1804, he tragically passed away, leaving his young sons to inherit and run Shirley. Hill Carter assumed the responsibilities formerly belonging to his father.
