Biography

Tailor was born in 1747. He passed away in 1796.

Richard Carter married Susanna Bigger in Prince Edward County 29 December (bond) 1772. Susanna, as administratrix, delivered the inventory of Richard's estate of taken 18 February 1796. Susanna married second David Powell 17 November 1796, and Powell became guardian to her three younger children, Richard, Samuel, and Nancy, by September 1797. [1] [2] [3]

A chancery suit of November 1796 identified Richard?s heirs as John Carter, who was then of age, and minors, Thomas, Lemuel, William, Mary, Richard, Samuel, and Nancy

Richard Carter was residing in Halifax county, Virginia at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Richard rendered material aid, in support of the Continental Army. Richard is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A020051. DAR Records indicate that Richard died before January, 1796, in Halifax county, Virginia and that his wife's name was Susannah Bigger. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their son, Lemuel Carter, who married Martha "Patsy" Powell; and of their daughter Mary "Polly" Carter, who married Mastin Powell. In 1772, in Prince Edward county, Colonial Virginia, Richard Carter married Susanna Bigger. [5]
