Biography

Zedekiah CASTLE[1] was born about 1778 in Virginia[2] and died after the enumeration of the 1850 United States Federal Census Record. Jenifer Allison stated that he passed away in 1851, but proof of this statement was not provided. His presence in the 1850 U. S. Census record of Lawrence County, Kentucky does support the fact that he was alive at the time of its enumeration. Therefore the statement has been made that he died after its enumeration.

At the time of the Tax list of 1823, Zedekiah CASTLE should have been about 45 Years old. The fact that he was not listed in the Tax list of 1822 points towards a time frame in which he settled in the county. However the tax list only lists him as being over the age of 21 years which would make the estimate of his birth years as before 1802.

Zedekiah Alan CASTLE was married before 1820 in “Place” to Julia Ann PENIX.[35] Closest estimate based on individuals that are believed to have been their children would place this marriage around 1810 - 1812 and probably in Russell County, Virginia.

1820 United States Federal Census Record states that Zedekiah CASSEL had a Free White Female living in his household that was aged 16 to 25 Years old. Also in this household were 3 Free White Females Under the Age of 10 and 2 Free White Males Under the Age of 10.[36] From the ages of the children listed, if they were children of Zedekiah that were born while he was married to Julia Ann PENIX, then it stands to reason that the marriage probably occurred before 1810 [this is allowing for 2 years between each child]. However the online digital records of marriage for Russell County, Virginia only begin around 1853. Upon further research it was discovered that a fire burned the first marriage register and most of the loose papers in the courthouse marriage records of Russell County, Virginia in 1872. Unless they married in a different county, I do not think a record of their marriage exists. If he served in the War of 1812, there may be a record in a pension of their marriage, or some statement of when the marriage occurred.
