ZACHARIAH CASTLE was born to JACOB CASTLE JR. and his wife, MARY SHANE, at Russell County, Virginia, in 1797.

ZACHARIAH was one-half Pekowi Shawnee - Wyandot - Metis.

On 23 July 1870 ZACHARIAH CASTLE was enumerated living alone at Copper Creek, Lebanon P.O. in Russell County, Virginia as household #114/115. His age was given as 80, born in Virginia c1790, a retired farmer with $100 real estate and $520 in personal property. He could not read nor write. He lived in very close proximity to son, John Castle and wife Jerusha, son Isaac Castle and second wife Martha. Nearby were many members of the Salyers family.

Zachariah served in the War of 1812. Upon returning home he married c1813 CATHERINE PENIX was born c1798 to JOSHUA PENIX and his wife ANNA CATHEY. Penix has been spelled various as Pennick, Penick, Pennix, and Penix. They had ten known children: ESTHER JANE "JENNIE" CASTLE, JOHN CASTLE, JOSHUA CASTLE, WILLIAM ALFRED CASTLE, JACOB CASTLE, ANDREW JACKSON CASTLE, SARAH "SALLIE" CASTLE, ISAAC CASTLE, ZACHARIAH H. CASTLE, and ELBERT S. CASTLE. All of their children were born in the Copper Creek area of Russell County, Virginia, where Zachariah was documented consistently from the time of their marriage. Though many of Catherine's family members moved to Lancaster County, Kentucky, Zachariah and Catherine stayed on in Russell County, Virginia.

The following members of the Jacob and Mary Shane Castle's family served as Patriots during the War of 1812 in Captain Colbird Fugate's Company of Riflemen, 2nd Battalion, 72nd Regiment from Russell County, Virginia: ZACHARIAH CASTLE, ZEDEKIAH CASTLE, JACOB CASTLE III, HENRY CASTLE, WILLIAM CASTLE, BENJAMIN CASTLE, JONATHAN SALYERS (husband of LYDIA CASTLE). All were privates except for Zedekiah who was a corporal. Elijah, Nathan, Injam, James H., and John Casltle were too young to serve. (Jacob lost Zachariah as a tithable in 1813 but gained the other sons as their birth years were so close.) In 1815, INMAN CASTLE, was accounted for as a Tithable for JOSHUA STAPLETON who lost one tithable in 1817 when INMAN STAPLETON (aka INMAN CASTLE) appears on the Personal Property Tax List, making his birth year as 1801. In 1820 ZACHARIAH CASSELL was enumerated at Lebanon Post Office, Russell County, Virginia with 2 white boys under age ten, one white male age 26-45, 1white female under age 10, and one white female age 26 - 45 This indicates that Zachariah and Catherine were born 1775-1794.

In 1830 ZACHARIAH CASSELL and his family were enumerated at Russell County, Virginia with a household as follows: 1 white male age 40-50 born 1780-1890; 2 white males age 10-15 born 1815-1820; 3 white males age 5-10 born 1825-1830; 1 white female age 30-40 born 1790-1800, 1 white female age 10-15 born 1815-1825; 1 white female age 5-10 born 1820-1825; 1 white female under age 5 born 1825-1830.
