Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Joel Chamberlain served with Cumberland County Militia, Vermont Republic Militia during the American Revolution.

Joel Chamberlain (Chamberlin), the son of John Chamberlain and his second wife, Susannah (Hatch) Green, was born June 4, 1752 in Hebron, Connecticut. [1]

On 20 January 1780, in Columbia, Connecticut, he married Lovina Newcomb. [2] [3]

He attained the rank of Sergeant in Captain William Heaton's Company of Militia, the Vermont Line. [4] [5]

He passed away in Rushford, Allegheny, New York, on January 20, 1817. [3] [6]

Research Notes

NOTE: Lavina dictated on the application for pension that she married Joel on January 20th, 1782. Marriage document says differently: 1780. That is what is saved to this profile. More likely: Her memory may have been wrong, or recorder wrote what she said incorrectly. - Brady

NOTE: There may be another Joel in Connecticut. I am still researching this. Whoever he is, they attained Lieutenant in the war. Lavina says on pension he only attained rank of Private. I have found proof he was at least a Sergeant. If this is also him, he was in both the Vermont (as Sergeant) and Connecticut (as Lieutenant ) militias.- Brady
