Biography

John Gage was born to George and Mary Chapel on February 9, 1880 in Grand Blanc, Michigan.[1][2] His father was a Civil War veteran. John came from a pretty large family.

In the 1900 Federal Census, he is recorded as being a boarder in the home of the McGee family in Boyne Valley & Wilson townships Boyne Falls village, Charlevoix, Michigan, United States. He was 20.[3] On June 4, 1904, he married Amelia C. Millie Kampfert. They were both 24 years old. John says that he is a farmer on the certificate.[4] In 1910, he was the Superintendent of Public Schools in Kalamazoo, Michigan.[5]

In 1917, he registered for the draft. The certificate says that he was short, of medium build, and had brown hair and eyes. He was 38. The record says that he was employed in "building" and the work address is the same as his home address. Clearly, he was not working as School Superintendent any longer.[6] The 1920 Census says that he and his wife have a 7-year-old daughter, Rosalynn living with them. (A records search for Roselynn doesn't offer much. She was born in 1912, died in 1988, and never married.[7]) Also, it looks as though Grandma Kampfert is there; Rozlyn Kampfert, 73 years old.[8] By 1930, he is listing himself as self-employed ("working on own account"). [9]

John Gage Chapel died in 1937 and is buried with his family in the Evergreen Cemetery.[10][11]
