Unto a Lady Title] 'On a scornfull La:' in Index Libelli. 1. Be-vile] Punning on 'Bevill': Essex Bevill (d. 1658), daughter of Essex Rich and Sir Thomas Cheke, married 1 Sir Robert Bevill of Chesterton, Huntingdonshire, and 2 (1642) Edward Montagu, second Earl of Manchester. 4. rich] Her grandmother Penelope Devereux (Sidney's 'Stella', sister of the second Earl of Essex) married Robert, Lord Rich, 1581, and had seven children (possibly by Rich), one of them Essex's mother, and five more with her lover, Lord Mountjoy, with whom she lived openly from 1601, and whom she married 1605 after a questionable divorce from Rich. Calfe and Margin. Es.] An 'Essex calf', used contemtuously of natives of Essex (cf. 'Essex girl'). 5. Trull] 'drab, strumpet, trollop' (OED), referring to her mother, not Penelope, as might be expected ('dam' is always thus, and II. 6-8 confirm). 6. Bull] A cuckold, because horned. 9. P[ir]goe] Essex Bevill's father, Sir Thomas Cheke, lived at Pirgo, Essex. 13. uncoupell] Let hounds loose to hunt. 15. Harts return] Stag's (and therfore cuckold's) horns. 15.1. fronti rara fides] Misquoting Juvenal II. 8: 'Fronti nulla fides,' 'Trust nobody's countenance.'[2]
