Biography

John de Cherleton, Knt., 3rd Lord Cherleton, feudal lord of Powys, Montgomeryshire, Wales, son and heir of John de Cherleton (or Charleton), Knt., 2nd Lord Cherleton, and Maud de Mortimer, was born about 1334 (aged 26 in 1360).[1][2][3]

John married in or before 1344 Joan de Stafford, daughter of Sir Ralph de Stafford, K.G., 1st Earl Stafford, 2nd Lord Stafford, by Margaret de Audley[1][2] (married in childhood). They had two sons:

  • John, 4th Lord Cherleton, married Alice Arundel[1][2]
  • Edward, K.G., 5th Lord Cherleton, born about 1371, died 14 March 1420/1, married first Eleanor Holand, second Elizabeth Berkeley[1][2]

John also had an illegitimate daughter by an unknown mistress.[1][2]

He was summoned to Parliament by writs directed Johanni de Cherleton de Powys from 14 August 1362 to 4 October 1373[3] and was appointed a Trier of Petitions in Parliament in 1372.[1][2]

John Cherleton died 13 July 1374[3] and was buried on 20 August 1374 at Strata Florida Abbey, Cardiganshire, Wales.[2] His widow remarried by 1377 to Gilbert Talbot, 3rd Lord Talbot, who died in Spain in 1387. Joan died shortly before 2 August 1397.[1][2][3]
