Biography

Robert Chichele was a son of Thomas Chichele and Agnes Pincheon of Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire.[1][2][3][4][5]

He had two brothers Henry Chichele (Archbishop of Canterbury) and William Chichele.[1][2][3][2]

Marriages

The Stemmata Chicheleana indicates that his first wife was Elizabeth, widow of William More; second wife was Agnes, daughter of John Faryngton and widow of Richard Marlow; third wife was Agnes daughter of William Apulderfield.[1]

The Visitation of Cambridge[2] recorded that Robert Chicheley has married a daughter of Apulderfield but did not name the daughter or her father.

Another Chicheley pedigree[3] also recorded that Robert Chicheley had married a daughter of Apulderfield but did not name the daughter or her father.

The HOP Biography[5] stated:

"According to A. Wood, Colls. and Halls Univ. Oxf. i. 259, Chichele’s third wife, Agnes, was Apulderfield’s da., but the source of this information cannot now be traced. Nor is there any further evidence to support his belief that Chichele had three da. by her. Neither of the MP’s two wills mention any offspring, alive or dead."

Steinman[6] was unable to tie an Agnes Apulderfield / Robert Chichele marriage into his Apulderfield pedigrees.

Children

He is said to have had three daughters by Agnes Apulderfield:[4]

  • Philippa (or Isabella) (married Valentine Chiche)[1][2][3][4]
  • Cecilia (married Thomas Toke of Bere, Kent)[4]
  • unknown daughter (married Roper)[1][4]

NB The Stemmata Chicheleana[1] only indicated two daughters, Philippa and the unknown daughter who married Roper. It noted that Robert Chichele had an unnamed sister who married Tooke.

Career

He was Lord Mayor of London on two occasions 1411-1412 and 1421-1422.[5]

Death

He had died by 6 November 1439.[5]

According to Weever[7][8] he was buried at St Mary Bothaw, City of London.
