Biography

Maria Barbara Christler was born in Switzerland, Lenk Im Simmental, Canton, Bern. She was the daughter of John Jacob Cristler.

Birth: 1661 at Siebenthal,Bern,,Switzerland[1][2]

25 Oct 1702. Marriage to Conrad Dieffenbach. This was a second marriage for Dieffenbach.[3]

1704 Birth of son Johann Ludwig, who dies in infancy

1705 Birth of daughter Maria Elizabetha

1708. Birth of daughter Anna Elizabetha

1710. Immigration to New York, via Rotterdam and London.

Immigration: 1709 to New York[4]

1711. Birth of son Johann Adam in Schoharie, New York.

1717: Simmendinger's list includes Johan Conrad Dieffenbach, his wife Maria Barbara and 5 children living in Schmidtdorf AKA Neu Ansberg, located about two miles north of present-day Middleborough.

1725-1727. Migration of family--via land route--from New York to Tulphehocken, Pennsylvania.

Johann Conrad Dieffenbach and his second wife Barbara Christler had the following children:

  1. Johann Ludwig (1704- ). Baptized 10 Sep 1704. May have died in infancy.
  2. Maria Elisabetha (1705-1797) m Johann Michael Ernst (1701-1785)l 13 children
  3. Anna Elisabetha (1708- ). Baptized 5 Aug 1705 at Weisloch
  4. Johann Adam (1710-1777) m Sybilla Kobel (1711-1807); 6 children
  5. Anna Dorothea (1714-1761) m Johannes Haag; his identity remains uncertain; see Anna's profile. Dorothea second married Greeninger.

She died after 1737, in Stouchberg, Pennsylvania.

Research Notes

Johann Conrad Dieffenbach had the following children by his first marriage:

  1. Johann Jacob (1690-1750). He does not emigrate with his father, but apparently later he does, as he appears on the South Branch of the Potomac, in Virginia and he is mentioned in his father's will.
  2. Catherine Margaretha (1698-1745) m Johann George Rieth (1692-1753); 5 children
