Biography

Abijah Church was born on 15 July 1745 at Granville, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.[1] [2] Granville is now in Hampden County which split from Hampshire County in 1812.

Abijah was the fifth child and third son of Jonathan Church and his wife, Abigail whose maiden name may have been White.[1]

Abijah was the brother of:[1]

  1. Elizabeth, born about 1737, died at Granville in 1748, aged 11;
  2. Samuel, born about 1739, died at Granville in 1748, aged 9;
  3. Ruth, born about 1741, died at Granville in 17625, aged 21;
  4. Josiah, born at Granville on 10 March 1742,[3] or 15 July 1745, married 31 March 1768, Mariah Clark;[1]
  5. Hannah, born at Granville on 22 October 1749,[4] died at Granville on 29 November 1840, aged 90, married Captain Nathaniel Bates the son of John;
  6. Bethuel, born at Granville on 19 September 1752,[5] married Diademe (Deidamia) Church on 5 May, 1774 at Westfield,[6] moved to Salem, New York, where he appears in the 1790 and 1800 Censuses;[1]
  7. Jonathan, born at Granville on 14 August 1755,[7] or 17 October 1755;[1]

Abijah married, before 10 April 1772, Sarah Hale, born 8 October 1748 at Suffield, the daughter of Joseph Hale and his wife, Mercy Gillett.[1]

All of the births of the children of Abijah and Sarah were recorded in Granville,[1] including:

  1. Issac, born 10 April 1772;[8]
  2. Sarah, born 11 April 1777;[9]
  3. Mary, born 24 October 1781;[10]
  4. Marcy, born 19 October 1784;[11]
  5. Abijah, born 7 October 1785;[12]

On 18 January 1777 and 21 May 1778, Abijah was living in Suffield, when his father gave him one half of his house, barn and the land between the house and barn. By 8 July 1796, Abijah was again residing in Granville, when his father gave him one half of the land he still possessed bounded by the Blandford Road.[1]

In the Population Schedule of the first census of the United States taken in 1790, Abijah and Josiah Church were heads of families in Granville Town, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Abijah's family contained two free white males of 16 years and more (including himself), one free white male under 16 years, three free white females, and no slaves.[13]

Ten years later, Abijah and Isaac Church were heads of families in Granville East Society. Abijah's household consisted of one free male aged between 10 and under 16, two free males aged 45 and over, two free females aged between 16 and under 26, and two free females aged 45 and over.[14]

Again in 1810, Abijah and Isaac Church were heads of families in Granville. Abijah's family contained two free white males, one aged 16 and under 26 and the other over 45; and two free white females, one aged 16 and under 26, and the other over 45.[15]

Abijah Church died on 15 June 1811 at Granville, aged 63.[1] In the census after his death (1820), Abijah Jun. and Isaac Church were heads of families in Granville which had become part of the newly formed Hampden County. Abijah Jun's family contained five free white males: two under 10; one aged 10 and under 16; one aged 26 and under 45; and the other over 45; and one free white female aged 26 and under 45; one person in the family was engage in Agriculture.[16]
