Biography

The Clarke Pedigree in the Visitation of Hampshire noted that Sir Henry Clarke was the son of Thomas Clarke of Avington and Amy, daughter of Christopher Conningsby.[1] It also noted that Henry had married firstly Mary daughter of Sir John Wood and secondly Margaret daughter of Richard Percye. He had a son Thomas by his first wife and a son Henry by his second wife.

Edmund Clerke died seised of the manor of Avington, Hampshire, in 1586, leaving a son and heir Thomas, who died in 1617, when the estate passed to his son Henry. It was conveyed by Henry, probably for the purpose of a settlement, to Sir Nathaniel Napper in 1634.[2]

In 1635 William Rolfe sold the manor of Enford, Wiltshire to Sir Henry Clarke. At Sir Henry's death c. 1654 the manor passed to his second son Henry (d. 1681), M.P. for Great Bedwyn in 1661, under the terms of a settlement made in 1639. In 1673 the younger Henry settled the estate on his son Henry and daughter-in-law Hester. Thus the third Henry, M.P. for Ludgershall in 1685, was succeeded at his death in 1689 by his widow Hester. From Hester the manor passed to her son George Clarke.[3]

A Henry Clarke was knighted on 29 Aug 1615.[4]

A son Henry was born before 6 Sep 1621 to Sir Henry Clarke of Avington, Hants, and Margaret, daughter of Richard Percey of Lee Court, Greatham, Hants.[5] In 1639 Sir Henry Clarke settled on his son Henry the manor of Enford, Wiltshire, on the marriage of Henry (the younger) to Isabella Warwick.[6]

Marriage

Henry Clarke, son of Thomas, married Mary Wood, daughter of John on 05 Jan 1602 at Hursley, Hampshire.[7]

Robin, Thanks again for providing the two sources. Source: Visitations of Hampshire: Clarke of Avington p.188/9 contains no dates for the provided pedigree but it does confirm the pedigree names extracted by your cited Ashworth Burke source. Examining these 2 sources helps me with the proposed merge of Henry Clarke's 2 wives. Thank you.
Glad you're online. Let me look at the Archives.org reference and see if I can't answer my questions from that source. Thank you Robin. The reason for accessing the Ancestry records: I was following your original source trail. I too find many errors in Ancestry, that's why I look carefully at what they've translated before using a reference. Glad to find another person conscious of this :-)
Having lost a lot of my early papers I am struggling to locate the references to Chesters Memoirs. Whilst I have a copy of the book I cannot currently find any reference to this person, I will continue to look.

Re the reference to Burkes family records pl see:- https://archive.org/details/familyrecords01burk/page/n335 for details on the Clarke family

In working a proposed wife merge I encountered the following problem: Unable to locate source: Burke, Ashworth P.; Burke's Family Records. Unable to locate this source in Ancestry.com (with full site subscription) or in Google Books. Please provide more information about this source in order for an outsider to access the same information. Thanks for your help.
In working a proposed wife merge I encountered the following which needs your help for clarification:

Re: Online site source www.Ancestry.com: Keyword Search on Burke's Family Records; Henry Clarke, b. abt 1650-60 (est.), Hampshire, England: No results. (2) Search in Ancestry.com for Henry Clarke same b. range. Results: Clarke records for baptisms in Somerset, Devon, Beford, Wiltshire, Buckingham, within an agreeable time frame for a 1722 3rd m. to Mary Wood. but no match on father Thomas Clarke. I did locate a Henry Clarke bap. 26 Oct 1651 in London to parents Thomas & Joane Clarke.

As with the request below 'we' need your help. Please provide a clearer search string in Ancestry (assume someone has a subscription and is an experienced user). Thanks for your

In working a proposed merge between wives of Henry Clarke I found the following which needs your help to clarify:

Re: Source 'Memoirs of the Chesters of Chicheley, Tyndall Pedigree: (1) Issue: Need source clarification: Source: Chesters of Chicheley: Searched Google Books page No. 188/9 and looked at the book text page 188/9.
