John Clayton Sr.'s name, as well as that of his son John Clayton Jr., were listed on a petition dated 26 Oct 1779 to the "house of Burgises" from inhabitants of Caswell County asking that an equal division be made of the county since it is 40 miles in length and 20 miles wide.

The Caswell County 1784 Tax List recorded that John Clayton Sr., living in the Nash District, owned 700 acres on the headwaters of Mayo Creek. His son John Jr. was also listed. His brother Thomas owned 565 acres.
