in 1780, John was drafted into the militia of Caswell County with the rank of private and served in Captain McFarland's Company of Colonel Moore's Regiment, North Carolina. He served for 3 months and was in the "Battle of Camden on the 16th of August, 1780. [2][3]
On the 11th of December, 1792, John Clayton marred Miss Nancy Merrit in Person, North Carolina.[4][5]
