Biography

Elias Clevenger lived in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Birth and Early Life

Elias Clevenger was born in 1764 in Shenandoah County, Virginia as the first of 11 children born to Thomas Clevenger (1740-1810) and Psyche Pitman (1743-1847)

He married Nancy Wood (1784-Feb 1863) in 1805 in Cocke County, Tennessee, USA. She was the daughter of of John Wood (1758-1821) and Rachel nee Moody Wood (1763-1836).

The 1830 Census in Cocke County, TN shows Elias as head of a household of 13 people total. 1 slave, male 24-35. It's a tally sheet and his age at the time should be about 66, but the closest there is to that is 50-59. There's also an even older female who is 80-89, presumably his mother, Psyche Pitman. The woman who would be about the age of his wife is 50-59 and Nancy would have been about 47. 1 male under 5, 4 males 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 20-29, 2 females 15-19. If the tally is looked at with each person's date of birth, the entire thing is a stretch; so perhaps not this Elias, although I don't know who else it would be in this time and place. The family is also shown on the 1840 census for Cocke County, Tennessee. This entire family is very difficult due to all the records for Cocke County, TN being burned in Newport court house, Cocke, Tennesse in 1876.

Military

Elias did service during the War of 1812 as a private in Col. Samuel Bunch's infrantry, East Tennessee Militia. He entered service 10 January 1814 in Capt. Allen's Company and transferred to Capt. Inglish's Company 2 May 1814.

He was "furloughed home from Fort Strother 27 January 1814, for inability," though the nature of this inability is unknown[2].

Death and Burial

He died on 17 June 1846 at the age of 82 in Cocke County, Tennessee, USA. Elias was buried in the Thomas Clevenger Family Cemetery, Cocke County, Tennessee, USA
