Career

Word op 7/1/1781 aangestel as klerk by VOC en in 1787 word hy aangestel as wynkoper en brandmeester.

Sedert 1793 tree hy op as vise-president van die Weeskamer en na oorname van die Kaap deur die Britte word hy reguleerder van die graan verbruik aan die Kaap.

Op 30/3/1803 word hy as lid van die koloniale rekenkamer aangestel.

In 1813 besit hy "Schoongezicht" (Idasvallei, Stellenbosch) wat hy volgens Constantia-patroon bewerk en ontwikkel.

Na vele eiendomstransaksies besit hy ook die plase Zandvliet, Soutrivier, Claremont (Stanhope) distrik Kaapstad.

Hy begin ook op uitgebreide skaal met grond in die Kaapse Skiereiland spekuleer, asook om na die tweede Britse besetting in 1806 met kleiner ware vanuit die Verre-Ooste handel te dryf.

Is saam met ander Boere mede-verantwoordelik vir die vestiging van wolskape aan die Kaap.

Hy het groot belangstelling in burgerlike sake en is ook stigterslid van die Landboukundige Genootskap op 29/11/1831.

In 1834 word hy aangestel as senior genomineerde lid van die Wetgewende Raad en word baanbreker van 'n polulere verteenwoordiging in die eerste SA instelling van die Westministerregeringstelsel.
