James Cochran was born in 1576 in Mayboy, Londonderry, Ireland, son of John Cochran (1558 - ) and Agnes Rennie (~1545 - ).
His siblings were:
James married Janet Burns (1605 - ) in Mayboy. Their son was George Cochran (1637 - ).

James father was employed as a Salmon fisherman, but he was apprehended for debt and forced to leave Griblen. They traveled by foot to the Foughen waters where he was protected and employed by Lord Askain.
Later in his life, James had religious vision: :He was in Trance three quarters of an hour, in which he had some discovery of Heaven and Hell and some visible sight of two persons of the Glorious Trinity the Father and the Son, but he could not so well discern the Holy Ghost. As his wife was weeping by him he said to her, hold your peace, weep not, for you and I will live 15 years together, which accordingly was accomplished. He lived 70 years & his wife above 90. Before her death 42 Grandchildren 43 of her Grandchildrens children and 3 of the fourth generation.[1]
