Biography

Edmund was the son of John Cockayne of Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire.[1] [2] [3]

He married Elizabeth Locke,[4] [5] about whom nothing else is known other than she was buried in Cockayne Hatley Church before 1513.

In his unsigned will dated 28 Mar 1513 he names his deceased wife Elizabeth, buried in Bury Hatley church, next to whom he wishes to be buried, with images of his seven sons and four daughters. Bequests were made to his son William £20; John £20, Edmund £20; daughter Ann 100 marks for her marriage. Son William to have his property in Potton, Bedfordshire, and his son Humprey to have the property in Hatley and Wrestlingworth, Bedfordshire which he had purchased from John Blayn of Gamlingay.[6]

He died before 8 Oct 1514, when a commission was issued of the goods of Edmund Cokeyn deceased to his executors John and William Cokeyn. On 18 Nov: 1514 a licence was issued for Humfrey Cokayne to enter lands of his father Edmund Cokayne without Inq. post mortem.[7]

There was a family dispute regarding his estate in the years following his son William's death in 1527, as the properties he bequeathed to his sons were subject to male tail, ie could only be passed to male descendants, according to VCH Bedfordshire Cockayne Hatley - https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/beds/vol2/pp215-218#anchorn21 - "Edmund appears to have left two sons, Humphrey, who died in 1515, the same year as his father, and William, to whom the estate, being entailed on male heirs, then passed."

Research Notes

Looks as though the Visitation is wrong when it says that Frances was daughter of William; and Chad was son of Humfrey. Seems to be the other way round[8]

An Inquisition Post Mortem was taken at the Guildhall London on 23 Sep 1516 where it was found that Humphrey Cokayne died on 26 Mar 1515, and that Frances Cokayne aged 1 on 24 Dec 1515 was his daughter and heir. It was said that John Cokayne, the "uncle", was seised of a certain yearly and quitrent of 6 1/2 marks issuing out of a tenement in the parish of the Church of St Mildred in the Poultry, London. So seised, by charter dated at London in the feast of St. George, 3 Henry V, the said John Cokayn granted the said rent to Reginald Cokayn his son, and Beatrice his wife, daughter of John Waleyr, esq., and of Joan his wife, daughter of Robert Turke: to hold to them and their heirs. By virtue of this grant the free tenants of the said tenement atturned the said rent to the said Reginald and Beatrice. After their death the said rent descended to the said Humphrey Cokayn as their kinsman and heir, to wit, son of Edmund son of John, son of the said Reginald and Beatrice.
