Josiah was born in 1824. He is the son of William Cole and Mary Freeman.
Josiah had three sons who served in the Civil War.
Leander W. Cole served in Company C of the 3rd Regiment Texas Cavalry, CSA. He was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri on 10 August, 1861, and died two days later. He was the first Civil War veteran from Cherokee County, Texas, to be killed in action.
Levi H. Cole served in Company F of the 3rd Regiment Texas Cavalry, CSA. He died on 9 November 1862.
William F. Cole served in Company D, 17th Regiment Texas Cavalry, CSA. He died near Atlanta, Georgia, in 1864.
