Research Notes

From 'Planters & Pioneers', by Esther Clark Wright, p77:' Collicutt, George (Collocut)- Chester. 1750. Came from Halifax, son of Thomas? CH: Thomas; Peter; Mary; Ann Barbary; Ann Margaret;; Hannah; George Henry. Collicut, Thomas from Halifax, 2 males, 1 female over 16, 1752 Father of George?' Page 261 (ibid) ' the diary of Rev. John Seccombe makes reference to baptisms of children in Chester. Among the names are Corkum and Collicutt.' Page 262 (ibid) ' Among the names of settlers who received land (Nov 1775) George Collicutt.' 'Returns of Settlers, Farm land, stock produce, etc., at Chester 1783: George Collicutt, settled 1760, 4 males, 6 females. Possibly this family came into Nova Scotia from New England, the so-called "Planters". Her father George was the son of Thomas Colicut (d. before 1779) and Margaret (d. 20 Mar 1779, Chester). Her mother Elizabeth was the daughter of Johannes Hogin (b. @1697) and Elizabeth (Possibly Laugenauer (b. @1700).

Possibly she is a descendant of Richard Collicutt who was in Dorchester by 1632, although not on the "Mary and John" as asserted by some biographers. See "The Great Migration Begins". pub by NEHGS.

The IGI (submission) sets her birth date as 14 August 1761. There is no submitter information available.

Elizabeth is stated as a daughter of George Henry Collicut however George's children are listed in a family group in the Chester Town records at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-8BCJ-N35 and it shows all the children attached to him EXCEPT for Elizabeth which would seem an unusual omission. It could be that she was missed due to her birth being in Halifax and not Chester however there are other families where children were listed that were not born in Chester. Are we certain that Elizabeth is a child of this George?
