Biography

European Aristocracy
Lord Sir William Compton was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

William Compton, 2nd Baron Compton, 1st Earl of Northampton and Knight of the Garter, was born in 1560 or before 1584, probably in Compton Wyniates, Warwickshire, England.

William Compton, was the son and heir of his father, Henry Compton, first Baron Compton,[1] and his first wife, Frances, who died in 1574, the daughter of Francis Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon, and his wife, Katherine, the daughter of Henry Pole, Lord Montagu.[2]

William had siblings:

  1. Thomas Compton,[1] (The History of Parliament says Henry had two sons by his second wife,[2] but he was not mentioned in the will of Anne Spencer, his father's second wife[3]) married as her third husband, Mary Beaumont, Countess of Buckingham, mother of James Iā€™s favourite, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham.[1]

After his mother's death, William's father married Anne, the daughter of Sir John Spencer of Althorp, Northants, and his wife, Katherine, the daughter of Sir Thomas Kitson of Hengrave, Suffolk, and the widow of William Stanley, 3rd Lord Monteagle, and from this marriage William was the half-brother of:

  1. Sir Henry Compton, born circa1584, married Cecily Sackville, daughter of Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset, and his first wife, Margaret Howard, the daughter of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk;[1]

William eloped with Elizabeth Spencer, b: ABT 1583 in London, England, the daughter of Sir John Spencer, marrying on 15 March 1599 or in 1594 in Baker's Basket from London, and they had children:

  1. Spencer Compton, 2nd Earl of Northampton b: 10 May 1601 in Northampton, England or c: 28 May 1601 in Saint Michael Bassishaw, London, Middlesex, died 1642/3;
  2. Elizabeth Compton, b: ABT 1604 in Compton, Warwickshire;
  3. Anne Compton, b: ABT 1611 in Compton, Warwickshire, died 17 Aug 1675;

In the will of Sir Henry Compton, knight, Lord Compton, dated 17 May 1589, proved 12 November 1589, he appointed as executor his son and heir, William Compton, esquire.[1]

William was summoned by writ dated 19 February 35 Elizabeth I [1592/3] to Parliament, in his father's Barony, as Lord Compton, and took his seat accordingly. On 14 June 1618, William was created Earl of Northampton.

William Compton, Earl of Northampton, died on 14 (or 24) June 1630, aged 70 years. An Inquisition post mortem was held on 14 April 1632 for the Earl of Northampton.

This William Compton was the son of Henry (not John) Compton and Frances Hastings and the stepson of Anne Spencer, his father's second wife.
The William Comptons in this tree seem to have ended up in a conflated mess of different generations and different people.

I set a couple rejected matches for comparison purposes to help unwind some of this to what it should have been.

Compton-1413 and Compton-677 appear to represent the same person because: one and the same
