Biography

Humphrey Carewe alias Cooke, of Westhorpe, co. Suffolk, born probably about 1485, died after 1545. The name of his wife is unknown.[1]

He first appears as a witness to the will of Thomas Carter of Westhorpe, dated 10 Mar. 1522/3. In the subsidy of 1523/4 he is called Humfrey Carew and is one of the largest taxpayers in Westhorpe. In 1533 he, as Humphrey Carewe alias Coke, with others, bought lands in Westhorpe, Bacton, Finningham, and Wyverstone, co. Suffolk. The last mention of him is in the subsidy of 1545/6.[1]

Research Notes

"He was probably a grandson of John Cooke and a great-grandson of Thomas Cooke of Cotton, co. Suffolk, the testator of 1471, but proof of this is lacking. " - deleted from above since I can't find any evidence of his parents.

Humphrey Carew alias Cooke was not the son of Sir John Cooke, who d. in 1516 and was succeeded by his son Sir Anthony Cooke KB, who is about 15 years younger than Humphrey and Sir John was about 12 when Humphrey was born. There's also no explanation for his alias.

In an original 1533 source he is Humphrey Carewe alias Coke, his children used Cooke. As has been noted there is no evidence of a connection to the family of John Cooke of Cotton, Suffolk other than his son William resided there. Carewe (not Coke/Cooke) is probably the alias as would be the custom for an adopted name. William Carew d.1501 was in Bury st. Edmunds near Westhorpe and was the only Carew in Suffolk but again seemingly no connection to Humphrey. William did have a connection to the Coke of Norfolk as did Humphrey through his son Thomas. The mother in-law of William's grandson George Carew was Elizabeth Throckmorton, 2nd cousin of Lord Edward Coke (whose children also used Cooke). William's great nephew Wymond Carew's mother (or step mother, that's another debate) in-law was Mary Coke d.1506, daughter of John (Doug Richardson says he was of Berkshire and does not connect him to the Norfolk family although Elizabeth's husband was also of Berkshire). As for Humphrey his 2nd son was John, it is traditional to name the 2nd son after the paternal grandfather. John was recorded in 1543 as John Coke alias Carewe and taxed as John Coke in 1545/6 along with his father Humphrey Coke whose son Thomas was a servant for and under the care of Sir Robert Jermyn as he was mentally incapacitated. Like for the name Carewe, Thomas being cared for by Robert Jermyn suggests his was a significant family. Robert's son in-law Ralph Sheldon was Edward Coke's mother's 1st cousin. Mary Coke Carew and Humphrey Carewe-Coke were contemporaries. Edward's gg grandfather was a John Coke (per Collins, BEB1841 makes him a great grandfather contemporary with Mary). In any event, if Humphrey was Mary's brother and received some sort of stipend from his niece's family (he was one of the highest tax payers in his co.) he might be legally obligated to adopt Carew. Mary Coke died a year after Martha was born and her father died when she was 15, Wymond may have needed Humphrey's permission. Not proof but more intriguing than being a Cotton Cooke, whom I've never seen referred to as Coke or Carewe. His name was Coke, the Norfolk family used Cooke and a Carew married Mary Coke's daughter. As a widow Martha spent six months in prison for attending mass, arrested a 2nd time she was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth who was Edward Coke's cousin through the Boleyn. Sometimes the obvious is true.

Carew used the alias Cooke. I agree with Sally's post on Cooke-109:

Sally Baker There are two sons called John linked to this Philip Cooke and his wife Elizabeth Belknap, John Cooke (Cooke-113) and John (Cox) Cooke (Cox-1190). I would suggest the 'John (Cox) Cooke has been incorrectly attached to Philip. Also, the Biography states that there were three sons (John, Richard and Anthony), so I would suggest that 'Humphrey Carewe Cooke' is also incorrectly attached as a child of Philip and Elizabeth. - See Visitations of Essex https://archive.org/details/visitationsofess13metc/page/38

NEHGR vol 75 (Moriarty) is really the only source and it says nothing of his parentage other than the "probably the grandson of John Cooke etc" so he really should be unlinked from Philip Cooke.
