Biography

Joan or Jane was the eldest daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay[1] and Elizabeth Hungerford.

She married 1st William Beaumont of Highampton.[1] They were living apart when she had an affair with Henry Bodrugan and had a son John by him. She married Henry Bodrugan soon after her 1st husband's decease. Their son John later claimed to be the legitiamte son of William Beaumont.[2] In lawsuits bewtween John and Thomas Beamont he was found to be a bastard.[3] This decision did not prevent him from obtaining part of the Beaumont property, The manor of Giddesham, in Devon, and other lands, were assigned to him.[2]
