Biography

European Aristocracy
Philip Courtenay was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Philip (II) Courtenay was the eldest son of John Courtenay, Esquire, of Molland and his wife Joan Bret or Brett.[1] He inherited the estate of Molland in Devonshire from this father.

Spouse

Molland, had been inherited fr According to Wikipedia, Molland Manor, Devonshire, was an ancient family fief of the de Courtenay family, a Norman-French family allied with William the Conqueror and the Plantagenants. This paragraph relates to "our" Phillip (de) Courtenay who descended from a second son: Phillip I Courtenay, AKA Phillip I de Courtenay of Molland:

"...Philip II Courtenay (died 1548) [2] of Molland, (eldest son) married Alice Matthew of Dodbrook. One of his daughters, Dorothy, married Anthony Culme "of Tiverton",[3] of unknown relationship to the Culme family of Molland-Champson which acquired Canonsleigh Abbey near Tiverton after the Dissolution of the Monasteries..."

Although there is no mention of Phillip's daughter, Catherine, her mother is clearly cited. These were the old landed gentry of Devonshire.[4]
