Daughter of Sarah Clinkscales Brownlee and John Cowan. Wife of James E. Pratt. Great-grandmother of President James Earl Carter
Sophonia Cowan's great-great-great-grandfather Andrew Seawright was from Londonderry, Ireland, and his wife Mary Eleanor Dickson was from Donegal. Their son James Seawright married Elizabeth McCullough, who was from Londonderry. Sophonia's great grandparents, Andrew Cowan and his wife Ann, came from County Down. Her great grandfather James Brownlee and his son George came from County Attrim and had sailed from Belfast. All of them were Presbyterians, driven from their homelands by king Charles II.[1]
Her great-great-great-grandparents Andrew Clinkscales and Mary Preston were from Glasgow, Scotland. The Clinkscales family emigrated from Scotland to Maryland and were living in Port Tobacco by 1791 (Carter,p.77).
In 1850 John and Sophronia are living in Abbeville, South Carolina, United States, with two children John, age 3 and Sarah age 0.[2]
