Research Notes

There are a number of conflicting sources on this profile which state he married at 15 years old in the USA before he even immigrated there.

The most glaring conflict referenced that he married almost 20 years after his death per Kentucky Marriages 1802-1850 by Jordan DODD for Andrew Cowan m=27 Dec 1807 Kentucky.

Whenever you are working on the wives, please also consider the problem that he has 3 sons named William.

Where is the proof of his wife, Ann's, maiden name? Where is the proof of his second marriage?

Andrew Cowan did not emigrate in 1772. He was issued a grant of land in Boonesborough, (later Abbeville) Granville County, SC on October 30, 1771. (South Carolina Dept. of Archives & History) His daughter Elizabeth Cowan stated she was born in Abbeville, SC on March 4, 1772. (Revolutionary War Widow's pension statement 1835) I don't know of one single source that says his middle name was Matthew.

It would really be helpful if the Profile Managers would update this page on Andrew Cowan. Please provide sources for information.

Andrew was married to both Ann Moore in 1763 and later to Martha Evans. I have no marriage date for Andrew and Mary, so it may not be correct.

The profile of Andrew Cowan has 3 sons named William. Please correct. Also, Andrew Cowan was not married to a Martha Evans. In his will of 1786/probated 1789 his wife is named as Ann. Please correct this profile that has many errors. Thanks.
