Biography

Janet Crichton was born illegitimately. She is the daughter of George Crichton, 1st and last Earl of Caithness and Janet Borthwick. She married John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell, son of Robert Maxwell, 2nd Lord Maxwell and Janet Forrester, circa 1454.

From circa 1454, her married name became Maxwell.

John, third Lord Maxwell, Steward of Annandale. Had charter of the Baronies of Caerlaverock, Maxwell and Mearns, February 14, 1477-8. M. Janet Crichton, daughter of George, Earl of Caithness, in 1454. Killed at the battle of Kirtle, July 22, 1484. Had;

1. Robert, ancestor of the Maxzvells of Cowhill.
2. James, ancestor of the Maxwells of Cavens.
3. Homer, ancestor of the Maxzvells of Portrack.
4. John, Abbot of Holywood.
