Biography

Cuthbert (Cunningham) Cunningham Third Earl of Glencairn is a member of Clan Cunningham.

Cuthbert Cunningham (Cunninghame) was the third Lord Kilmaurs and the third Earl of Glencairn. Some accounts refer to him as the second Earl of Glencairn as his father's Earlship was rescinded.

He was the son of Robert, second Lord Kilmaurs and Christian Lindsay.[1]

He married Lady Marjory (Marion) Douglas, eldest daughter of 5th earl of Angus,[2] They had one son,

  1. William, the fourth Earl of Glencairn.[2]

Cuthbert was restored to his grandfather’s title, Earl of Glencairn, by the Act of Revocatory passed in 1503. His father Robert, Lord Kilmaurs, was second earl by right; though he did not bear the title. [1]

The title Earl of Glencairn was given in by charter to Alexander Cunningham. It was stated by an English herald that he was “belted” earl of Glencairn on the13th of August in1503, at the marriage of James IV to Princess Margaret of England.

He sat in parliament on the 8 Nov 1505, as Earl of Glencairn. In 1526, he was appointed one of the members of the secret council, and joining the earl of Lennox, in his attempt to rescue king James V from the power of the Douglases, was engaged in the battle near Linlithgow 4th December of that year, when Lennox was slain and himself wounded.

He died between May 1540 and May 1541, by which time his son became, the fourth Earl of Glencairn.[2]
