Biography

Family and Education

Edward was born about 1543, the third son of Sir Arthur Darcy and his wife, Mary Carew.[1][2] He matriculated as a Fellow-Commoner from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1561,[3] and was admitted to the Inner Temple in November of that same year.[1][3]

He was appointed M.P. for Truro, Cornwall in 1584. [3] On 27 September 1592, Darcy received an M.A. degree from Oxford University,[4] and on 11 May 1603 he was knighted.[5][6]

Marriage and Children

Edward Darcy married Elizabeth Astley, daughter of Thomas Astley, Esq. and Mary Denny, although the date of their marriage is unknown.[1][6] There were at least thirteen children from this marriage:

Additional Positions Held and Land Acquistitions

Darcy was a courtier who successfully remained in favor throughout the reign of Elizabeth I.[6] In 1583, he was selected to personally carry letters from the queen to Francis, duke of Anjou, and William of Orange.[1][6] Soon after, he was made an M.P. representing Truro in Cornwall although he did not prove to be a very active member of parliament.[6] He also became, in 1583, an extraordinary groom to Elizabeth I, later (in 1595) replacing his father-in-law, Thomas Astley, as Groom of the Queen's Privy Chamber.[1]

Between 1578 and 1584 he, along with six of his brothers, conveyed a number of his family estates in Yorkshire to other influential men willing to acquire them, among whom were Thomas Cecil and his own father-in-law, Thomas Astley.[1] He also received a number of properties as grants from the queen: the manor of Curdworth, Warwickshire; the manors of Coulsdon in Epsom and Sutton in Surrey (received on the death of his uncle, Francis Carew); and the manor of Ashtead in Surrey.[1] In 1606 he was granted Dartford Priory for life.[1]

Darcy was granted several patents which provided him with additional income. The first was for sealing leather but "...[it] led him to commit 'such exactions and outrages as disquieted all England"[6] and was replaced (before May 1598) with a patent granting a monopoly on the importing, manufacturing, and selling of playing cards.[1] This patent also ran into oppostion and resulted in several lawsuits, each time causing Darcy to seek the Privy Council's intervention by requesting "letters of assistance" so that he could enforce the patent.[6] There were so many complaints that eventually a special tribunal was appointed to investigate the situation and, in 1603, the court decided that monopolies were against common law and Darcy's patent was voided.[1][6]

Edward Darcy, by this time a very wealthy man, retired to Dartford Place where he spent the remainder of his life.[6]

Death

Sir Edward Darcy died on 28 October 1612 at Dartford, Kent, and was buried at St. Botolph's, Aldgate, London.[1][6][17] [18][19]

Letters of Administration were granted on 6 November 1612 to his son and heir, Robert Darcy, Knt. and re-granted 17 June 1612 to his second son, Christopher.[1][6]
