Biography

Nicholas Derby was the son of Robert Derby. Occupation: Gentleman. The inquisition post mortem of Nicholas Derby, gentleman dated 19 May, 42 Elizabeth (1600), shows that at his death he was seised in fee of a moiety of the manor of Bryanspuddle, co. Dorset, of lands at Sterthill, and of the capital messuage called the Free Chapel of St. Luke's at Sterthill, with the tithes pertaining thereto, and that he had conveyed to his sons Roger, Laurence, and Nicholas Darby the said lands and tithes in Sterthill for their lives, and afterwards to his son Christopher Darby and his male heirs, or, in default of such heirs, to the said Roger, Laurence, and Nicholas and their heirs in succession.

The jurors found that Christopher Darby was the son and next heir of Nicholas Darby and was aged 25 years and more at his father's death. Admisistration on the estate of Nicholas Derby of Sturthill was granted in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 28 April 1600, to his widow Catherine, and on 11 Feb. 1606 to his son Christopher, the widow having probably died in the interval. He married Catherine Buckler before 1571. Nicholas was present at Christopher Derby'S christening in 1571 at Asherswell, County Dorset, England. Nicholas was present at Roger Derby's christening in 1576 at Asherswell, County Dorset, England. Nicholas died in 1606.^[1]
