Court Records
15 Nov 1224 - "The honour of Wallingford. The king has granted to Hugh Despenser a moiety of the manor of Chalgrove with the capital messuage, and to Hugh de Plessetis, Drogo de Barentin and Nicholas de Boleville the other moiety with appurtenances formerly of Peter de Maulnay, in order to sustain them in the king's service for as long as it pleases the king. Order to the keeper of the honour of Wallingford that, by the view and testimony of trustworthy and law-worthy men of his bailiwick, he is to cause Hugh Despenser to have full seisin of a moiety of the same manor with the aforesaid capital messuage, and the abovesaid Hugh, Drogo and Nicholas to have full seisin of the other moiety of the aforesaid manor with appurtenances, saving to Alexander of Dorset the corn that he bought from Peter's bailiffs from the land that Peter had in Chalgrove, and saving to the king the rest of the same corn with the rest of the stock and chattels found in the same manor.
"Order to the same keeper to cause the corn formerly of the same Peter in Chalgrove to be valued, and if that corn ought to remain to the king, then he is to deliver it to the aforesaid Hugh Despenser, Hugh de Plessetis, Drogo de Barentin and Nicholas de Boleville so that they answer the king at the Exchequer for its value, and if it ought to remain to the said Peter, then it is to remain to him, saving to Alexander of Dorset the corn that he bought from the bailiffs of the same Peter in Chalgrove." Thanks. Wikipedia gives no sourcing and should not be relied on. Reliable sourcing is required before the suggestion that he married Mary de Quincy can be accepted. The entry for his son Hugh in the revised edition of Cokayne's Complete Peerage indicates that the name of his wife is not known: G E Cokayne, Complete Peerage, revised edition, Vol. IV, St Catherine Press, 1916, pp. 259-60, https://archive.org/details/completepeerageo04coka/page/258/mode/2up. His son Hugh's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography names no mother. Medieval Lands states that the name of Hugh's wife is not known: https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISH%20NOBILITY%20MEDIEVAL2.htm#HughDespencerdied1265.
Hi y'all! I just set a few rejected matches for Despenser pairings that had been set as an "unmerged match". Please review the following rejected pairs to see if you agree or have more info that might lead to getting them to their proper places in the family:
Le Despenser-35 and Despenser-40 appear to represent the same person because: I think these profiles should be merged. Lots of duplicate profiles for folks in this family, but also lots of "maybe not duplicates" (similar dates but enough differences to be rejected rather than proposed to be merged). The dates for these two aren't incompatible and they share a father. So... please merge le Despenser into Despenser so that we have one less Hugh Despenser profile to wonder about. (or reject, if they're not profiles for the same person). Thanks!
Maryann Hurt, Maybe John Atkinson should do the merge of the mothers before we try a merge here. I do not feel qualified so hopefully the Profile Managers will help. Thanks for your consideration.
I have tried to merge this profile (Despencer-48) into the locked HSA Despencer-65 - but I get the message that I should reverse the merge = higher ID into lower ID which of course I should not do so they remain un-merged
